About Miramichi Highlands Protected Natural Area

The Miramichi Highlands Protected Natural Area encompasses approximately 23,000 hectares of largely unspoiled boreal forest located in northern New Brunswick, Canada. This protected region lies within the highland plateau associated with the Miramichi River watershed, characterized by rolling hills, steep river valleys, numerous lakes, and extensive wetlands. The area is dominated by a mix of balsam fir, black spruce, and white birch forests, providing important habitat for species such as moose, black bear, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Historically, the region was used for traditional logging and served as a seasonal hunting and fishing ground for Indigenous communities. Today, the Miramichi Highlands attracts outdoor enthusiasts interested in backcountry hiking, fishing for Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi River and its tributaries, and wildlife observation. Due to the remote and rugged nature of the landscape, visitors experience a high degree of solitude and natural sounds. Key landmarks include Eagle Mountain, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding highlands, and the numerous pristine lakes scattered throughout the protected area. The area also contains cultural heritage sites linked to the Mi’kmaq people, adding an important cultural dimension to exploration. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining the forest health, protecting watershed integrity, and preserving habitat for vulnerable species. Visitor access is typically by marked but lower-use trails, with an emphasis on low-impact recreation and wilderness appreciation. The Miramichi Highlands Protected Natural Area provides a vital refuge for biodiversity and a rewarding destination for outdoor recreation in New Brunswick’s natural landscape.
